Vintage Prison Folk Art

Folk arts are traditional art forms handed down from generation to generation, where objects are crafted of materials indigenous to the place from which they are from.

In prisons where resources are slim to none, inmates create objects with soap, cigarette wrappers, toilet paper, toothpicks, and much more.

This particular prison art piece functions as a storage box and is made from foil cigarette wrappers and plastic instant noodle packages.

There is a mirror in the lid that has a square cut out in the center because inmates are not allowed to make anything that could have an area to smuggle contraband, so this cut-out allows the inside of the lid to be inspected before it left the prison.
